God conceals. Kings search.

That is Proverbs 25:2, and I have carried this verse with me through years of searching:

"It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter." (Proverbs 25:2)

I remember when I first understood that God's hiding is not a door slammed in my face — it is an invitation. He conceals for His people, not from them, so that the search has substance and the finding has joy. The concealment is His glory; the searching is our honour. It is not always easy to hold on to this when the text seems silent, but I have found it to be true again and again.

There is a detail in the Greek here that no translation will show you, and it changed how I read my Bible. In Hebrews 4:12 the Word of God is called "a discerner" — kritikós (G2924), built on the word for a judge, and that word appears exactly once in the whole New Testament. Look at what the verse actually says: the Word does not sit still waiting to be searched. It pierces "even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit... and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12). I thought I was searching the Word. The Word was searching me.

The Torah plants the same image. Aaron's dead rod, left overnight before the testimony, "budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds" (Numbers 17:8) — three stages of fruit on one branch in a single night. I think of the generations of searchers this way: the Masoretes counted every letter, the lexicographers catalogued every root, and in our generation we run corpus scans across the whole Torah. What I keep finding is that the deeper the search goes, the more the letters point to what the surface always preached: Christ at the centre. New tools, old testimony.

Then Peter completes the thought: "ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9). The honour of kings belongs to you who believe — you are invited into the search, and no one can take that honour from you.
